Lincoln Free Walking Tour

Lincoln is a small city with a big history.

The Lincoln Free Walking Tour will take you through the history of Lincoln from it’s inception as a Roman fortress right through to the present day city. The walking tours are designed to be fun and engaging, and we hope our love of the city and it’s heritage will shine through.

We meet on Saturday and Sunday mornings in Castle Square, the heart of uphill Lincoln. We explore the historic core of the city before meandering down Steep Hill into the modern city and ending at the Brayford Pool.

You can book onto one of our guided tours below. If you have any queries please consider our FAQs below. For large group bookings or private tours please email us directly at

How long are the free walking tours?

Our tours are approximately 2.5 hours long and cover approximately 4 miles. Lincoln lies on a big hill, so we have ensured that our tours head down hill rather than up.

Do we need to book?

As we have limited capacity on our walking tours, we ask all attending to book using our online booking system to ensure a place on the tour you wish to attend.

Do the tours go ahead whatever the weather?

Yes, even if it is raining the walking tours will still run as planned. Please consider bringing appropriate footwear and an umbrella or raincoat in case it does rains.

Do you have the correct insurance in place?

Yes, our tour guides are fully covered by an appropriate level of public liability insurance to protect ourselves and others on and off the tours.

Are the tours really free?

Yes, there is no obligation to pay anything for your tour. However as we run the tours in our spare time and are not subsidised, we operate on a ‘pay what you think it’s worth’ model and ask all attendees to consider leaving a tip based on their experience at the end of the tour. We can accept both cash and card payments on the tour. This ultimately means we work extra hard to ensure you have a great time!

Is there a toilet break?

There will be an opportunity to use the public toilets in Castle Square half way around the tour; however please be aware that these are 20 pence per visit.

Is the tour accessible for all?

We have done our best to ensure that the tour is accessible for all; though please bear in mind Lincoln is a historic city with some narrow footpaths and cobbled streets. There are some steps on the tour which can be avoided if needed.

Are the tours suitable for all ages and are they dog friendly?

We welcome inquisitive minds of all ages on the tour and have tried to make the content interesting for all. Well behaved dogs are also more than welcome to join us.
